Timber Harvesting & Forest Management

Maine Custom Woodlands specializes in helping Maine landowners meet their forest management goals.

Why Work With Maine Custom Woodlands?

Full In-House Service

From start to finish, Maine Custom Woodlands handles all services in-house, meaning no unknown contractors on your property. This also keeps our costs lower, meaning we can pass these savings onto you with better stumpage rates.

30 Years of Experience

With thirty years in business and three Licensed Foresters on staff, we have the experience and knowledge to prescribe the best type of timber harvest for your forest and goals.

Sustainable Practices

We use whole tree harvesting system to ensure that no part of the tree is wasted. While some contractors may leave less favorable material such as branches and tree tops, we chip these into biomass, a vital renewable resource.

Since 1993, Maine Custom Woodlands has been working to:

Meet landowner goals:

Whether your priorities for your land are wildlife, recreation, aesthetics, or income based, our foresters will determine the type or harvest that best suits your woodlot.

Provide clear, understandable documentation:

We aim to be transparent from the start, providing landowners with clear documentation such as harvest proposals, contracts, mill trip tickets, scale slips and settlement reports.

Improve the health of the forest:

With three licensed Foresters on staff, we have the knowledge and skills to ensure the health of your forest is preserved for years to come.

Pay attention to forest aesthetics:

Worried about what your forest will look like post-harvest? We have a full excavation team ready to clean up and ensure your land is even better than we found it.

Care for wildlife:

Whether you’re a bird watcher or avid hunter, we can prescribe the right harvest to foster healthy wildlife habitats. We also work with the Maine Natural Areas Program to check if endangered species, sensitive habitats, or invasive species exist on the property prior to harvesting.

Our Process

Free, No Obligation Timber Appraisal

A licensed forester will come to your woodlot for a free, no obligation lot walk and timber appraisal. You can be present for this, or they can go independently. They will then sit down with you and talk about the goals you have for your property and create a harvest plan and proposal that fits your objectives. If you decide to move forward, our Foresters will also find and flag your property lines - no need to hire a surveyor.

Timber Harvest

Our timber harvesting crew will arrive and begin the harvest. A 'landing' or main work area, will be created, along with skid trails for the wood to be pulled to the landing. Wood will then be organized by product type at the landing. It will then be loaded onto trucks and delivered to a local mill or biomass plant. We diligently track all loads sent to mills and provide that documentation to you.

Close Out

Once the harvest is complete, our excavation team will take over and 'close out' the project. Weather permitting, they will smooth out any large ruts left from the timber harvesting equipment to ensure that the property is left in great shape. Many landowners use the newly made skid trails for recreational use such as hiking paths or ATV trails. Landings also make a great place to put in a new home or building.

"I was very impressed with the job you did on my property and with every single part of the crew. From the forester to the truck drivers. Everyone was great!

I worked in sawmills for years and have hunted all over the state so I really can appreciate what a great job you guys did. Trevor set up a perfect spot for a food plot and cleared a spot next to our house so we could install solar and selectively cut the rest. Already seeing more deer and it hasn’t even been a year. I’ll recommend you guys to anyone I know that needs any sort of forestry work done."
